Our Company

A.B. Systems, Inc. is a design/build commercial construction company headquartered in Rochester, Minnesota. We were incorporated in 1972 by brothers Karl and Peter Schuller. We are an employee-owned (ESOP) company, with 49% employee ownership, making us one of the few construction companies to participate in an employee stock ownership program. We have constructed over 12 million square feet of commercial building space in the past 45 years, and specialize in the design and construction of commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings. We have done over 2000 jobs in our company’s history, and have worked with notable companies such as Viracon, McNeilus Steel, Alumacraft, Wells Fargo, Hormel, Pepsi-Cola, Fed-Ex, Rochester Medical, Halcon, West Bank, and Tom Kadlec Honda.

We have our own Architectural Drafters, Architectural Designers, 3D Modelers, and an On-Staff Architect, and we partner with the best civil, structural, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical engineers. During construction, we have our own steel erection, carpentry, and roofing crews, and partner with expert sub-contractors, while overseeing all divisions of the project as the general contractor.

Pete Schuller Chairman

Pete received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and Economics from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Following college, he was a Systems Analyst and Marketing Representative for three years. Pete is Co-Founder of A.B. Systems, Inc. He spent twenty-eight years as Vice President of A.B. Systems, Inc. before taking the role of President in 2000. In 2020, Pete moved into the role of Chairman.

Steve Knode President

Steve attended Building Trades at North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, Iowa. Following that, he spent three years as a self-employed carpenter and eight years in commercial construction, with five of them as a Superintendent. Steve spent twelve years at A.B. Systems, Inc. as Construction Manager. In 2002, Steve took on the role of Vice President and Operations Manager. In 2020, Steve moved into the role of President.

Shaun Knode Vice President- Operations Manager

Shaun received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Construction Management with a Minor in Business from Minnesota State University - Mankato in 2004. He has four years of experience as a Steel Erector and six years as a Project Manager and Estimator. In 2008, Shaun joined the A.B. Systems, Inc. team as Construction Manager. In 2017, Shaun transitioned into Project Management and Estimating. In 2020, Shaun moved into the role of Vice President and Operations Manager.

Brent Kaslow Vice President- Business Development Manager

Brent received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing from St. Cloud State University. He had six years of professional sales and management experience prior to joining A.B. Systems, Inc. In 2016, Brent joined the team as a Business Development representative. In 2020, Brent moved into the role of Vice President and Business Development Manager. Along with this role, Brent also manages marketing and social media.

Mike Riehl Construction Manager

Mike has been with A.B. Systems, Inc. since 1994, and he became a Job Superintendent in 1997.

Recent projects include Viracon, Fed-Ex, McNeilus Steel, Albert Lea Port Authority, and Deml Ford.

In 2020, Mike transitioned into the role of Construction Manager.

Heather Scheidt-Sylvester Architectural Drafter/Designer

Heather received her Associates Degree in Architectural Drafting and Design from Northwestern Technical Institute, Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Following college, she gained five years of experience in Architectural Drafting and Design. Heather joined the A.B. Systems, Inc. team in 2002.

Shawn Woyak Architectural Drafter/Designer

Shawn received his high school diploma from Rushford Senior High School, and attended Rochester Community and Technical College for general education credits. Prior to A.B. Systems, Inc., Shawn worked as a Forklift Operator for 3 years. Shawn has been with A.B. Systems, Inc. since 2008. He spent his first 4 years as a Laborer/Steel Worker, and was promoted to Job Superintendent in 2011. In 2018, Shawn became a Designer/Drafter.



Dean McGuire Estimator

Dean received his high school diploma from St.Charles Senior High School. Prior to working at A.B. Systems, Inc. Dean worked 18 years as an Estimator for a HVAC/Mechanical Contractor, and 4 years as Estimator/Project Manager for another General Contractor. Dean joined A.B. Systems, Inc. in 2019.

Rick Pape Estimator

Rick received his Diploma in Construction Estimating and Architecture from Hawkeye Institute of Technology in Waterloo, Iowa. Following that, he spent thirteen years gaining experience in Construction Estimating. Rick joined A.B. Systems, Inc. team in 2005.

Tim Boardman Job Superintendent

Tim was with A.B. Systems, Inc. from 1993-1999, and rejoined as a Job Superintendent in 2010.

Recent projects include West Bank, Halcon Furniture, Perkins, Season’s Hospice, Minnesota Public Radio, Geotek, Harmony Enterprises, and Rochester Medical.

Eric Braun Job Superintendent

Eric has been with A.B. Systems, Inc. since 2006. He has been a Job Superintendent since 2011.

Recent projects include Advanced Disposal, Ultimate Surfaces, Halcon Furniture, Concast, Immanuel Lutheran School, Meadow Ingredients, Minnesota Metal, and Subway.

Jon Buker Job Superintendent

Jon has been with A.B. Systems, Inc. since 2000. He has been a Job Superintendent since 2007.

Recent projects include McNeilus Steel, Community Celebration Church, Primrose School, Channel One Food Shelf, Envirotech, and Interstate Mills.

Jason Hunt Job Superintendent

Jason has been with A.B. Systems, Inc. since 1996. He has been a Job Superintendent since 1997.

Recent projects include Tom Kadlec Honda, Pepsi, LME, Charter Communications, Rochester Montessori Schools, Good Earth Village, Ellingson Companies, Albert Lea Transit, and Cedar Valley Services.

Erwin Riehl Shop Foreman

Erwin joined the A.B. Systems, Inc. team in 2013, bringing with him four years of experience as a Fabricator and seventeen years of experience as a Welder.
